"Mother of the senses, touch is the first sense to develop, even before birth. It continues to be critical to our experience of life until the moment we die. Yet it remains largely unconscious and unexplored."
"Cultural inhibitions around touch, an over-dependence on sight, and the disembodying forces of technology serve to unmoor us from the sensuous world, from our roots in nature, and finally, from ourselves. These conditions give this sensory approach to art a purpose and urgency that transcends the aesthetic." - Rosalyn Driscoll
Art in Touch is a new initiative, a tactile arts network, set up recently with the aim of creating a platform for the meeting and promotion of artists whose work is not only concerned with the visual, material or sonic, but which also consciously involves direct engagement with the tactile. The two founding members, Katie Gaudion and Tereza Stehlikova; are currently researching at M.Phil level at the Royal College of Art, and are both involved with practice-based tactile research into, respectively, textiles and animation / film.
